Early reduction of sensory processing within the visual cortex when switching from internal to external attention

چکیده
The neurocognitive process underlying attention switches between external (perception-based) and internal (memory-based) is poorly characterized. Previous research has found that when participants switch either two perception-based tasks (within-domain switches) or a memory- task (between-domain switches), substantial similar processing cost was observed compared to the repetition of same (Verschooren, Schindler, De Raedt, & Pourtois, 2019). Here, we recorded 64-channel EEG while carried out within- versus between-domain attention. ERP results showed during early sensory processing, marked P1 attenuation associated with both types, suggesting switching an bottleneck information processing. This gating effect stronger from task, tasks, different top-down requirements for them. These findings are in line earlier proposals literature.

15 صفحه اولEmotional facilitation of sensory processing in the visual cortex.
A key function of emotion is the preparation for action. However, organization of successful behavioral strategies depends on efficient stimulus encoding. The present study tested the hypothesis that perceptual encoding in the visual cortex is modulated by the emotional significance of visual stimuli. Event-related brain potentials were measured while subjects viewed pleasant, neutral, and unpl...

Neuromagnetic fields were recorded from human subjects as they listened selectively to sequences of rapidly presented tones in one ear while ignoring tones of a different pitch in the opposite ear. Tones in the attended ear evoked larger magnetic brain responses than did unattended tones in the latency ranges 20-50 msec and 80-130 msec poststimulus. Source localization techniques in conjunction...

The basic, biologically inspired idea of the authors (and some more in the scientific community) is to apply an attention-based type of filter on the great amount of visual input data and only perform further analysis on the tiny rest. This residual is what we call the regions of interest (ROIs). There have been many approaches to computation of salient features in a static image, e.g. [1] show...
